    • Obituary Mary Ann Taylor Wood

Northern Virginia Daily on Jan. 8, 2014

Mary Ann Taylor Wood, age 83, of Browntown died on Monday, January 6.

She was born in Newport News, VA on February 22, 1930 to the late Howard Taylor Sr. and Lillian Peterson Taylor Chellis.

She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA and attended the College of William and Mary nursing school. She married the late Charles Bryant Wood on June 4, 1949 and they lived in Arlington, VA where they raised their three daughters and were active members of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In 1972 they relocated to their home in Browntown, VA.

Mary Ann and her husband lived in the Caribbean region for many years where Mary Ann partnered with Charles in his career in international development work. With every relocation to a new assignment for Charles, Mary Ann, who was a Girl Scout leader for more than 30 years, made herself familiar with the needs of women and families in the local community and established classes to meet those needs. She taught literacy, sewing, financial management and family literacy teaching mothers and children basic literacy skills so mothers could help their children be successful in school and many other courses she created to assist women and families.

She was recognized by the U.S. government for her commitment to volunteer work in international settings and recognized by the governments of Grenada and Barbados for her role in developing effective model training programs for women in those developing nations.

Although they traveled all over the North and South American region during their pre-retirement years, Mary Ann and Charles enjoyed travel after retirement when they toured Europe, including Scandinavia and Russia.

Mary Ann was a member of Browntown Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was an active volunteer in many local organizations including Literacy Volunteers of Warren County, C-CAP and the local school tutoring program. An avid gardener and conservationist, she was a member of the Valley Garden Club and the Izaak Walton League Ladies of the Valley Chapter. Reading and sharing the joys of reading was one of her lifelong pleasures. She was a founding member of the Browntown Book Club and a longtime member of the Warren Heritage Society. Mary Ann and her husband, Charles owned Constant Spring Inn and Restaurant in Front Royal.

Mary Ann is survived by three children, Elizabeth Iden of Browntown; Melanie Hudson of Woodstock, GA and Charlynn Turner of Harrisonburg. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mary Ann led a remarkable life of service, faith and commitment. Devoted to her family and her faith, Mary Ann extended her commitment far beyond family and local community, touching so many whose lives were directly and positively impacted by her own life of service.

Memorial donations may be made to Browntown Baptist Church Memorial Fund or to Liberia Orphan Education Project (LOEP).

Family night will be held Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Maddox Funeral Home from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday at Browntown Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m.
