- Former Resident Killed in Holdup -
(Note: Below is an article which appeared in the March 1st Grand Island Independent, which concerns the death of Raymond Rasmussen, 31, of Omaha, son of James and Anna Rasmussen, former Wolbach residents. The victim is also the grandson of the late Mrs. Bengta Rasmussen, who for many years resided where the Eugene Jacobson family now live.)
"A Halloween masked gunman shot to death liquor store clerk Raymond Rasmussen, father of five children, Friday night. Police said the youthful witnesses told them the gunman exclaimed "this is a stick-up" immediately upon entering the store, and Rasmussen replied, "Are you kidding?"
Without another word, the witnesses told police, the gunman fired a bullet into Rasmussen's head.
The two witnesses, another clerk and a newspaper boy, ran into the basement and hid until police arrived.
Police were called by customers who entered the self service store and found Rasmussen lying near the telephone."
(The victim was born in this community and while a young boy moved with his parents and sister to Grand Island, where his father worked for the railroad. The family later moved to Omaha.)
Survivors include his wife, Jean; four sons, William, Robert, James and Rickey; one daughter, Madelyn; his parents and a sister, Esther Henderson, all of Omaha.

According to articles in the Omaha World Herald, Luther Wesley Wilson was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to the electric chair. His sentence was commuted to life by the Nebraska Board of Pardons in Feb 1961, after he admitted the killing, but testified that he was nervous during the robbery and fired the gun by accident. He died October 13, 1974 at age 45 in the yard of the Nebraska Penal complex when he was stabbed to death by another inmate.
