    • Highlights of History written by Eleanor Stark Edman1906 to Moroni P. Stark and Sarah Hansen Stark. I was the 5th child and 2nd daughter of my parents. My parents were in the process of building a new brick home which we moved into when I was 6 months old. When I was about four, Dad put me on a horse and I have loved horses all my life. A few years later Dad bought me a little bay horse and we named her Fly, I loved her and learned to ride her like the wind, always bareback. In the summer my job was to herd our cows on the Leland roads. As I grew older my summer job was changed from herding cows to thinning beets. Our Dad had a big farm and always had 20 to 30 acres of ssuger beets. An adult would block them with a hoe leaving a bunch of the beets for the thinner to come behind and take all but one out. So up and down those 40 rod rows we went day after day. Also my summer jobs included weeding and tromping hay and later topping beets.ool life I went to a 1 room school house in Leland. In my second year of school my Dad left for a mission to Denmark during World War I. This put a real burden on mother and the older kiids, especially 16 year old Henry who had the reponsibility of the farm. It caused him to miss alot of school, so he graduated a year later, but then as valadictorian of his class. I was in 5th grade when Dad came home, he was so tall and handsome. I went to Spanish Fork for fith grade at the Thurber School. In sixth grade I went to the Central School, two blocks east. In High School, Dramatic Art was my love and I learned poems & readings by the score. In Leland, I was called on constantly to give a reading for church or entertainment. Most of boy & girl entertainment was dancing. I never learned to dance well & as a result I was often left sitting on the bench. &nbnbsp; This was a great sorrow in my growing up years. I was pretty, smart and good at sports but this one thing left me a wall flower.e so we made some good friends. My major was Dramiatic Arts. Anna graduated & got a job at Weber College in Ogden. I went to Ogden with Anna for my second year of college. The next two college years I attended BYU, rooming with Mary Brockbank. We had fun times togeather, one was spending the night on the Y mountain with several friends. I graduated from BYU in June 1929 with a degee in teaching. was further away and that appealed to me. The next nine months were full of many things. The job was quite overpowering. My co-workers wer helpful, nice and friendly. Some of my students were darling and some difficult. I lived with the McClaus family, the only non-mormon family in town. They were good to me and helped to dispell my home sick feelings. They took me them to Phoenix for Christmas. We had a young crowd in town that would meet at diferent homes for parties. We had a good time. I taught Dramiatic Art, Speech, World History & Biology. It kept me busy keeping ahead of the class. I didn't like teaching so I didn't sign up for the next year. At the end of the school year, I said goodby to good friends and the wide open spaces of which I have never returned. New York for the summer. We got an apartment in upper Manhatten and for six weeks took classes at Columbia University, which was just a block away. Each Friday night we attended a Broadway Play and each weekend we traveled to some section of the country such as Virginia and Atlantic City. Henry, who was working for Dupont in Delaware was with us on most of our trips. Helen had a crush on him and he was trying to decide if he liked her that well. At the end of our school we headded for home, visiting Niagria Falls and the sacred places of church history on the way back. I had a wonderful experience that summer.ile she had therapy. She never improved from her depression so we came home after a few months. little town of Elberta. I lived in the mining town of Dividend and took the school bus down each morning to teach in Elberta. I had met Frank Edman of Salem thru a play I had directed and acted in. He was interested in me and took me to Dividend each Sunday night. I taught in th Elberta 2nd and 3rd grades the next year. My father died very suddenly that year, November 1934, leaving Mother very lonely, so my supervisor transferred me to the school in Benjamin for the years 1935 & 1936. me a diamond and we planned our marriage for the December 31, 1936. We were married that day by special appointment for the temple was closed for the Holidays. The President of the Temple married us. Afterwards we had dinner at Frank's brother Vern and his family and visited his brother Len and his family. They welcomed me with open arms and gave us lovely gifts that we have used over the years. &nbsbsp; We stayed in the Temple Square Hotel for 2 or 3 days and enjoyed our time there. When we got home mother welcomed us warmly and we stayed there the night and went to the Honeymoon cottage the next day. This was a cute little house owned by Mel Hanks next to his home in Salem. The town's people were very kind and gave me a warm welcome. They liked Frank and were tickled he was at last married. He was 45 and I was 30. We lived here until November. ;During this time Frank was in the State Legislature in Salt Lake, I would join him at times for the weekend. year in Benjamin. By April I knew I was pregnant so the next years I became a housewife and mother. We were both exciteited and thankful to become parents. We moved into our new cute and cosy home on November 6th and on January 15, 1938 our darling baby boy, John Nick was born. Richard was born two years later. He was almost 3 when when 9lb 11oz G Gary was born, then before I knew it I was pregnant again. The result was wonderful, for we got our first baby girl born on Christmas 1943. She was beautiful and has continued to be thru the years. Frank was a wonderful fatatherr. During these early years Frank had positions of responsibility, being mayor for 4 years and on the high council for many years. I kept busy in the home and served in the Primary, Sunday School and Relief Society of which I was alslso President. The years were full of work and fun and happiness with husband and children.ch school in Salem that very week. I was in the midst of canning and was unprepared in every way, but I did it and taught 2nd grade for ththe next three or four years. Then they had learn the library work in summer school and I was the librarian for the next 3 years. I loved that and I also taught remedial reading. The district then cut out the library progrram and they sent me to teach 7th grade. I didn't like that so I quit. By this time the kids were pretty well thru school and we didn't need the extra cash.t 1990: "I have been moved to Gary's home in Arizona. I can no longer care for myself, so Gary and JoAnn gave taken that job. They are very good to me and each child treats me well. Since I have been here Richard came to visit and Sharyn and Courtney came for a week to care for me, when Gary and family went on vacation. My nights are often long, tonight is one."
