Soren Pederson Stark was born Sept. 5, 1829 in Reeschalshede, Serup Parish, Woborg County, Denmark. I was baptised April 11, 1857 in Burop Mosa, Skanderborg by Peter Christensen Clemont, confirmed by Peter Just. Was ordained a Priest Aug. 9, 1857 and an Elder Oct. 31, 1858. I was called to preside over the Forkel Branch and on April 8, 1860 I was called to preside over the Mols Branch. The Lord blessed me in very many ways so that many became enlightened and interested in the gospel and received the gospel message. I labored in Mols Branch until Oct. 1, 1861, when I was transferred to labor in Rouso Sonderbaldt, North Hereder. Here the Lord blessed me exceedingly, that there were many so many meetings held as I preached the gospel and bore my testimony.

In the spring conference I was released from my mission to go to Zion. We left Aarhauus April 7, 1862. We started for Kiel, went on the railroad from Kiel to Hamburg, Germany. We raised anchor April 15, 1862 and sailed down the Elbe for America. On April 16, 1862 I was married to Annie Sophia Peterson. During the voyage she was sick, near unto death but through faith and prayer she became well again. The ship Franklin sailed from Hamburg, Germany with 413 Scandinavian Saints, under the direction of Christian A. Madsen. Between 40 and 50 children died of measles on board the ship. We landed in N.Y. May 31, 1862 and after two days for quarrintine, on leaving the Franklin, my wife slipped and got her leg between the plank and the ship and almost crushed it. That same evening we went on train to begin our journey westward.

Our railroad journey lasted until June 9, when we reached Florence. The journey on the train was hard for my wife; her leg became stiff from sitting still so long and caused her much intense pain. While in Florence we got some medicine which helped cure the leg. It was God's miracle her leg wasn't crushed and injured serverly. We stayed in Florence until July 14. During this time I was chosen to help watch over the sick. We were intending to go with the church wagons to Utah, but C.A. Madsen persuaded me to go with his company. They agreed to take my wife and Karen Marie.

We came to Salt Lake City Sept. 23, 1862. Church Chronology: "The Independent Companies of Scandinavian Saints under the direction of Christian A. Madsen and Ola N. Liljenquist, which had left Florence July 14 with about 500 immigrants and 80 wagons arrived in great Salt Lake." We came to Spanish Fork Sept. 27, 1862 abd canped at Gardner's Mill wiht Marinus Larsen. We were welcomed at the home of James Hanson. Lofter Bjornson allowed us to live in a cellar of his for some time. Then we bought a house where we lived until January when we moved to Moroni. Here I built a house in the summer of 1863. We also bought our first cow that summer.

On Sept 7, 1863 our first son was born. He was blessed Soren Pederson by me in Fast Meeting. He died May 26, 1864 in Moroni. In the year 1864 bread stuff was very scarce, so that it was hard for many to get along. I promised my wife that if she would give to the poor and the Indians we would never suffer for bread. On Sept. 16, 1865 our second son died, then we were childless again. I was very sick part of that summer. April 10, 1865 the Indian war broke out and we had much to do guarding the settlers from Indian raids and from stealing the cattle. We had to go to the grist mill a great distance in a company for fear of Indians. We went thru many hardships in settling the sparce places of our state, but the Lord blessed us and helped us to endure all things for the Gospel.

Soren Pedersen Stark by Norma Woodward Schow
      Contributed By: BadeRachelMichele1 · 21 oktober 2014.

Soren Pedersen Stark was my grandfather on my mother’s lineage and he was born on Sept. 5, 1829 at Reesdalehede, Gerup, Pariish-Viborg, Denmark. His father was Peter Sorensen Pederstrup and his mother was Anne Elizabeth Winkler. (I have not discovered the reason for changing Pederstrup to Pedersen and adding Stark, but they did in the U.S.).

Little was recorded of his childhood in grandfather’s journal, but his baptism date was Apr. 11, 1857.

After being ordained an Elder, he was called to preside over the Forkel Branch and, sometime later, over the Moso Branch--at Rouse Souderhalet of North Thereder. During this period, grandfather met and converted a lovely young lady, Anne Sophia Petersen whom he married two years later.

While presiding over this area, he wrote in his journal: "We held many meetings and the Lord blessed me & many listened, I bore my testimony to many and some were baptized. The people seemed to awaken and listen to the gospel that I preached to them...In the spring conference, I was released from my mission to make it possible for me to go to Zion.”.

With a company of eager Saints, grandfather, Soren, left on April 7, 1862 from Aarhus and went by railroad from Kiel to Hamburg, Germany, where they boarded the Sail-Ship Franklin. They were on the ocean for about eight weeks, suffering a great deal of illness and many sad deaths. Soren wrote: "The bunks were below deck and were so wide that three persons easily could have room in one of them side by side. Eleven lanterns were lighted every night. Some of the saints carried the measles with them from the their homes and the disease... involved 40 persons, mostly children. Many of the saints were also suffering with diarrhea, which caused very much, weakness of the body. They held a council meeting every night and the sanitary conditions of the ship' s apartments were attended with great care...Three times a week the decks were washed and twice a week the ship was thoroughly fumigated by BURNING TAR."

On April 16, 1862 Grandfather Soren Pedersen Stark and Anne Sophia Petersen were married on board this sail-ship Franklin. With their great love for each other and their intense desire to enjoy the freedom of America where they could earnestly live the commandments of the Gospel, these faithful pioneers were able to endure the trials and hardships of this voyage.

Anne Sophia was one of the near tragedies on this ship of 413 Scandinavian Saints, who were under the direction of Christian A. Madsen. Soren records: "My wife was very ill, near unto death and the elders administered to her...and by the power of the priesthood, she was restored to health." Nevertheless, 62 of the Franklin’s company of Saints died between Hamburg, Germany and their Salt Lake City destination.

After the Franklin sail-ship docked in New York on May 31st, they traveled by train to Florence, Nebraska where Soren acted as both doctor and nurse to the sick until they rejoined this group of Saints on July 14, 1862. They traveled to Utah with an independent company of 500 immigrants and 80 wagons, and as directed by Christian A. Madsen as well as Ole M. Liljenquist. After more than two months of hardships in crossing the plains, they arrived at Salt Lake City on Sept. 23, 1862.

Within a few days, four, of these brave pioneers were sent to help settle Spanish Fork, on Sept. 27. A kind friend, Lofte Johnson, let them have a cellar to live in.

In January 1863, with some other Saints, Soren S Anne Sophia was again sent to help colonize Moroni in San Pete County near Manti. In the summer they built a two-room log house and bought their first cow. On Sept. 17, their first child was born and named Soren Pedersen Stark. They were so happy with this lovely boy, but were not to enjoy him for long as he died at the age of 8 months on May 26, 1864.
      .
From great grandmother, Anne Sophia’s journal, we read..."When I was very sad, with the trials and hardships of pioneer life and longed for my sister and friends in the green lands of far-off Denmark, my kind and good husband, Soren, would always comfort me and me to have faith in the Gospel and my trust in the Lord."

On October 30, 1864, they were blessed with another son, whom they also named Soren Pedersen Stark. .
In this winter of 1864, great grandmother and great grand father, with their small son were again called to move. They were with the first twenty families that settled Alma, which is now called Monroe, Sevier County, near Richfield. Soon after their move to Alma, the Black Hawk Indian War began in April 1865.

Within a few weeks, for their protection, the settlers of Alma built a fort with log houses on three sides and a rock wall-ten foot high on the fourth side. On the northeast side of the same block, was built a corral for stock.

Before the fort was ready for occupation many people found over night rest in the meeting house, as they were in danger of attacks by the Indians. Great grandfather helped build this fort and was a home guard.

From Soren’s writings we again quote: "We lived in the fort during the Black Hawk Indian War, with the families of Alma, for almost one year...While enduring all the trials and hardships of the War and pioneer life, sorrow struck again, taking the life of our second son on Sep. 16, 1865." .

To multiply their problems, the Indians drove off the settler's cattle and killed several persons.
Since these settlers had to go sixty miles to the mill to have their flour ground, they traveled in company’s, to protect themselves from the Indians. On one of these necessary excursions, an accident occurred to Soren on the return trip from the mill with the wagons loaded with flour and foodstuff. While crossing a river, some of the wagons were swept downstream. Teams and wagons were overturned and several horses were lost. Much of the food material was spoiled and lost, and great grandfather, Soren, had a very narrow escape from death.

From the Church Section of the Deseret News dated March 26. 1960, are quotes from the following article: "Some of the men were too anxious to recover their stolen cattle...and they pushed up the canyon against the better Judgment of their leader in the Alma area. About twelve miles up the narrow defile, rocks and trees all around (Indians)-seemed to open fire. One man was killed and another left wounded in the wild retreat back to Salina."
"Several other skirmishes were fought in the valley. A number of men, women and children died in Indian attacks and cattle were being driven off constantly during the summer months. .
"With no hope for peace in sight, the evacuation order came from Pres. Brigham Young. From there they dispersed to the various northern settlements.... Peace was finally made with the Indians...but not until 1872."

Grandfather Soren and grandmother Anne Sophia moved back to Spanish Fork where they built a two room log house. My grandfather, Alma Pedersen Stark, was born here on Dec. 19, 1874; they were blessed with four more sons and two daughters, with two more dying in infancy. Though grandmother was forced to live in a wagon box or white top, with small children, during the home construction, she was so happy to return to Spanish Fork. They had such faith in the Gospel and the prophet and would endure any sacrifice to be obedient to the commandments and to live in America. They never gave up.

Soren cleared off the side hill into terraces and planted all kinds of fruit trees, from which he later grafted choice fruit. As well as being known as a fine horticulturist, he was one of the first pioneers to plant sugar cane and own his own molasses mill. He was widely known for his clear and fine flavored molasses.
On one of the trips to Sanpete County, with a wagon load of this excellent molasses to trade for flour and food stuff, Soren contracted a severe cold, which apparently resulted in pneumonia, From which he died May 14, 1881 at the age of only 52 years. .
Great grandmother Anne Sophia Pedersen Stark was left young widow with four children, the oldest one only eleven and my Grandfather, Alma was just eight years of age. She did not remarry. But continued making the molasses, butter. And raising Vegetables, which she sold to the stores in Spanish Fork as with Her husband. She faithfully and joyfully continued with church service and caring for the sick in the community, at all Hours of The day and night, and would not take pay for this activity.
